The Math Behind It

EV = P(correct) × 1 - P(wrong) × 0.25
  • EV > 0: Guessing gives you a statistical advantage
  • EV = 0: Neutral - no advantage or disadvantage
  • EV < 0: Skip - guessing hurts your score
Decision Framework

When to Guess vs Skip

Use this decision framework to quickly determine the best action for each question during your test.

Definitely Guess

  • You can eliminate 2 or more choices
  • You have a strong hunch about the answer
  • Time is running out and you have unanswered questions
  • The question type is your strength area

Consider Guessing

  • You can eliminate only 1 choice
  • You have partial knowledge of the topic
  • You have extra time at the end
  • The question seems familiar but uncertain

Skip the Question

  • You cannot eliminate any choices
  • The topic is completely unfamiliar
  • You are running low on time with easier questions ahead
  • Random guessing would be your only option

Elimination Mastery

6 Powerful Elimination Techniques

Master these techniques to quickly identify and eliminate wrong answers, increasing your guessing success rate.

Extreme Language

Answers with words like "always," "never," "all," or "none" are often incorrect.

Example:

"All mammals live on land" - Incorrect (whales are mammals)

Look for absolute terms and eliminate them first.

Out of Scope

Eliminate answers that go beyond what the passage or question discusses.

Example:

If the passage is about climate, an answer about economics is likely wrong.

Stay focused on the specific topic being asked.

Opposite Meaning

Sometimes two answers are opposites - one is likely correct, eliminate the other.

Example:

"increase" vs "decrease" - analyze which fits the context.

When you see opposites, focus your analysis on those two.

Too Specific/General

Answers that are too narrow or too broad compared to the question scope.

Example:

Question asks about "fruits" but answer mentions only "apples."

Match the scope of your answer to the question.

Irrelevant Details

Answers that include true but irrelevant information to distract you.

Example:

Correct fact but doesn't answer the actual question asked.

Always re-read the question before selecting.

Partial Truth

Answers that are partially correct but missing key elements.

Example:

Answer mentions one cause but the question asks for the main cause.

Look for the most complete answer.

Pro Tips for Elimination

  • Always read all five choices before eliminating any
  • Cross out eliminated choices physically on paper tests
  • Don't second-guess yourself - trust your first instinct
  • Practice elimination daily to build speed and accuracy
