SSAT Guide

The Parents' Guide
to SSAT Prep

You don\'t need to know the test content to be the most important part of your child\'s success. Here\'s exactly what your role should be — and what to avoid.

Your 4 Roles as a Parent

The most effective SSAT parents aren\'t tutors — they\'re strategic supporters.

Create the Environment

Your job isn't to teach the content — it's to create the conditions for learning. Quiet study space, consistent schedule, and low-pressure support matter more than tutoring.

Manage the Timeline

Most families start too late. Ideally, begin 8–12 weeks before the test. Register early — popular test dates fill up fast, especially in fall.

Regulate the Pressure

High parental anxiety transfers directly to children. Students who feel excessive pressure perform worse. Encourage effort, not just scores.

Track Progress, Not Perfection

Focus on improvement trends, not individual test scores. A student who goes from 50th to 70th percentile over 8 weeks is on an excellent trajectory.

Do\'s and Don\'ts

Small shifts in how you engage can make a big difference in your child\'s performance.

Ask "How did you feel about the practice test?" instead of "What did you score?"

Demand score reports after every session

Celebrate consistency — showing up to study every day

Only praise high scores

Help schedule study time and protect it from other activities

Add more activities during peak prep period

Learn the basics of SSAT scoring so you can have informed conversations

Assume a 90% correct rate means 90th percentile

Communicate with your child about which schools they're excited about

Make the test feel like a judgment of their intelligence

Ensure 8–9 hours of sleep, especially the week before the test

Allow late-night cramming sessions
